About

Sri Lanka is a tropical island at the tip of the Indian subcontinent. It has been dealt the double blow of a long war (now over), and the Asian Tsunami of 2004, which killed 35,000 Sri Lankan people. As a result of these two issues, as well as the financial crisis the tourist industry, which thousands of people depend on, has been devastated.

We are two English/Australians, now retired and spending much of our year in Sri Lanka. We are hoping to be the link between the poorest people in our area and our home countries.
Although we are not religious, we have discovered that members of the Catholic church are selflessly working for the same purpose and we are currently trying to support their efforts.

The intention of this web-site is to raise awareness of the plight of the poor in Sri Lanka and for us to work virtually from wherever we are in the world at managing this site, in order to facilitate the transfer of donations directly to the nuns of the Galle convent or to the chosen families and children.

We have been joined in our efforts by a friend who is a nurse in Doncaster, England, who is also working tirelessly to raise awareness and donations including used mobile phones. We also have good contacts in Denmark and Australia.

We would welcome the support of any other volunteers who feel they can help us with this task in other ways or other countries. We would also appreciate support from other people by adding our hiplanka.com/projects url to their site.
